Transgender Teens Win State Championship, Sparks Dissent

Transgender (MTF) Track stars Terry Miller and Andraya Yearwood blew away their competition to win the Connecticut state championships in girls track and field. Miller, a sophomore at Bulkeley High School took home gold in both the 100m and 200m dash. Andraya, a sophomore attending Cromwell High School took second behind Miller in the 100m dash.

The wins have sparked dissention in some, claiming their biological sex has given the track stars an unfair advantage. Parents and students have begun local petitions to change athletic policy in regards to transgendered individuals participating in categories differing from their biological sex, however statewide change is more difficult.

The Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference (CIAC) states that their policy mirrors state law and for them to make a change regarding the subject, a change in state law must occur first.

However, they emphasize that they are listening to the concerns, but the topic is highly complex and any action to remedy the concerns is far off.
