Trump Declares National Emergency at Mexican Border, Clears $8Bil for Border Wall

President Donald Trump declared a national emergency last Friday to gain access to congressionally denied border wall funding. The decision follows Trump’s two month ordeal with Congress that resulted in the recent government shutdown and has brought the problem of separation of powers into the issue.

In a televised announcement from the White House’s Rose Garden, Trump cited the emergency as “an invasion of drugs and criminals coming into our country.” Additionally, Trump touched on topics such as the economy, China, and his upcoming meeting with Kim Jong Un.

The total combined funding achieved for the wall comes to approximately $8 billion. From the emergency declaration, Trump has been able to garner $3.6 billion from military construction projects, $2.5 billion from traditional presidential budgeting out of counter narcotics programs, and $1.375 billion authorized for fencing in a spending package authorized by Congress.
